The trails are well maintained and great for hiking, biking, dogs. Most people on the trail are considerate of others.

These are well maintained trails and easily accessible from town. The hills are, however barren and summer heat can be intolerable. It's worth a little extra drive time to get into the trees in the mountains.

The trails are well maintained and easy to follow. The Boise foothills are a gem and Ridge to Rivers takes great care of this treasure.

The trails were great and you could see so much beautiful scenery. We only hiked a short trail, but look forward to going back.

We decided to hike the Table Rock Trail last Monday, which was a coolish day - just perfect for a hike! The trail is behind the Old Idaho State Penitentiary. (If you’re an out-of-town traveler, don’t miss touring the Old State Pen. It’s real old Idaho history, and well worth a visit.)
The hike is about 3.7 miles up and down. Took us a couple hours. The views are great, and the cross at the top is a sight to see. Get to the top, touch the cross and say a prayer! (How about: "Thank God I made it here. Now get me back down, without falling on my face!) Interesting fact: millions of years ago, the top of Table Rock was the bottom of Lake Idaho, and stretched all the way to Oregon. Fast-forward to today with glacial erosion, and voilà: Table Rock! (I hope you enjoyed how I just explained millions of years in 2 sentences.)
Also note: this hike is steep and slippery along the way, with a number of rocky sections on the path. It can be challenging and a bit difficult. Even dangerous, especially for novice hikers, or older people. If you have health issues, or are out-of-shape, this hike is probably not for you.
All that aside: take some water with you, and wear hiking boots or shoes with good treads. Like I warned above: there are a few slippery spots, along the path. Be extra careful on the way down. And have a Table Rockin’ Good Time!

It is worth spending some time walking a trail on this system but without trees or real height it is not a repeat worthy visit for a tourist....but for a local it would be a nice daily exercise trail system.

We live out of town and were just visiting for a day. Doing some exploring and looking for a good vantage point in order to take some photos.
We found Table Rock by accident but are very glad that we did. The view is tremendous and inspiring. There is a cross at the top, which I'm told light up at night, along with some radio/cell? antennae.
About 20 people were also up there on an afternoon and only 4 cars. Then we saw the trail up, with more hikers going in both directions. Wow!
Next time we will walk in from downtown and get some exercise.
Go if you can.

You can literally walk from the lowest point in the valley to the highest point on this trail system! The trails are well maintained, and you always feel safe from other humans, though you might run into a shy animal once in a while...

This is a unique opportunity to have a 200 mile trail system this close to a large city. The trail system spans from the sage brush high desert up to pine forest and has something for everyone. Great hiking, running and mountain biking trails and most do not allow motorized vehicles. Most allow your dog to be off leash as long as you keep them within 30 feet.
The system is well marked and there on line maps as well as paper maps available. You can get the paper maps at most bike shops, running shops and sporting good stores.
Early mornings and late afternoons are your best bet to see wildlife.

we started the river trail from our downtown hotel from the Julia Davis park.
It is a great trail to walk bike or run, and extends all the way to the boise foothills just after the local golf club.
with plenty of things to see, we used the trail to visit the local swimming pool but found numberous different activities to do.
there was river rafting, a nature park with a 6 foot sturgeon fish in ,a zoo,and shool sponsored gardens, also a beer garden resturant, and a golf club
the trail has really nice sidewalksand beauiful scenery.
Well worth a visit and it is a public area so it is free to visit..

Where is a good spot to rent cruisers where I can begin some flat riding?

I agree with Jennifer. There aren't many flat land places to ride (other than surface streets) these days due to flooding. I might suggest renting a mountain bike at any of the great shops we have in Boise, and hit the foothills. The lower trails offer lots of easy riding with little elevation.
