I hiked a bit of this trail at the end of a long day of exploring. I started up around 5pm and was forced to turn around just before mile 3 because it was getting dark and giant clouds were moving in. I was the farthest one up the trail, hiking alone, and my phone had just died. A few other hikers had already turned back and passed me on their way down. I would've liked to have seen a bit more, but the views in the first few miles were worth the time I spent there.
Within the first mile, hikers are treated to some beautiful views overlooking grassy vineyards and ponds in Calistoga below. There were a few little watershed cascades trickling down the rocks in the dirt walls along the reddish dirt path, and later some granite stone surfaces with ruts worn into them by the heavy wagons of the past, laden with mercury from the mines.
This trail used to be the wagon trail road from Calistoga to Oat Hill to access the quicksilver mines. Construction started in 1873 and took 20 years to complete.
In the crisp, cool air of a late afternoon in April, this was a pleasant hike. I imagine it would be quite hot in the summer months, though, as shade is scarce, and the incline is steady.
The trail is free to hike, located just north of the junction of Lincoln Ave and the Silverado Trail in Calistoga.
The parking area at the trail head fits only three cars, so prepare to park across the street on one of the smaller side roads.
There are NO bathrooms or water fountains on this hike. It is reported to be an 8 mile hike up to the top. Bring water, layers of clothes, repellant, hat, and sunscreen. It's a popular hike, so it's best to go as early as possible to beat the crowds and the heat.

We hiked up about 21/2 miles and were treated to stunning views of Calistoga and the surrounding hills and vineyards. We passed through stunning flowers and trees in bloom, and saw remnants of the 2020 burn areas, but it was a wonderful hike!

The live oak trees in the winter, with no leaves and dramatic moss hanging off the branches, were absolutely amazing, and the main trail is a road, so wide, flat, and easy (though uphill) grade. There are also a number of side trails which I mostly used, but these are straight-uphill bootpaths so recommended for experienced hikers with proper footwear.

This trail was right near our hotel so we decided to go around mid day and feel like we were burning off some of those vacation calories we had been accumulating. Beautiful views and the trail is semi shaded - I would probably say about half is in shade. You can really stop and go back whenever you want because some portions were relaxed and walkable while others were decently challenging!

Nice hiking area which is close to downtown Calistoga. The trail head is at the corner of Lincoln avenue and Silverado trail. There is a parking lot with limited spots and there is also parking along the road.
We hiked about 2 miles up and then back for a lovely early morning hike. A bit rocky and dusty, but beautiful views long the way.

I did the Oat Mine Trail on a Sat morning (about 2 course for a 6.3 mile or so hike). I followed the route in all trails which veers off the mail road to the left at about mile 2.3 and gets very narrow with breakthrough views of Mt St. Helena at mile 3 or so. It meets back to the main road at the rocky summit. Gorgeous.

My mom and I tackled this trail and did about 5 miles. It is a bit tough for flatlanders as you climb, and climb and climb. But we LOVED it. It wasn't too challenging to stop - we just took a few breaks here and there. It gave us time to check out the gorgeous views. We had the trail to ourselves early on but on the way back we passed tons of hikers. Happy trails!

Great place for a morning hike prior to wine tasting! Park at the trailhead and be prepared to go uphill. The trail is well-marked and the first mile or so gives a great view of the valley.
We only did the first couple miles--I think it can be up to 14 (7 each way) out and back.

Great place to hike or ride in the morning before a day of wine tasting. It is up hill so take that into consideration when planning or going with individuals who might not be prepared. When I stay in Calistoga - I hike this every morning and it is beautiful!

We had a bit of a hard time finding it. It is more like 1900 than 1800. Where Lake hits Lincoln. It was an ok hike. There is not much shade, as a result, there was a rattlesnake sunning itself on the path.

how many miles before you get pretty good valley views? how many miles did you go and how long did it take?

Can start seeing down the valley after about a mile up. Total to top is just under 2 1/2 miles. We took an easy pace and made top within hour. You can continue down south-side trail but end up far away from starting point. Early morning fog rising from the valley will limit views until it burns off with sun. Easy trail and hike but very worth the views.
