We enjoyed a nice walk through the rain forest
Although we had a guide this was not needed and as the guide said very little he was superfluous to our walk.
There were a few uphill sections but overall it was easy walking on a well marked path with some large tree roots to navigate
It was a little disappointing that the fauna and flora was not marked as some information on the names of the flowers and trees would have been helpful
This is a good opportunity to sense the nature of the rain forest

An excellent opportunity to experience some of the flora and fauna of the rain forest without getting lost.... We booked throught Island Routes (Sandals) and were part of a small group for the tour. Stout footwear (sneakers) is a must.
It's not hard but is not easy, you're issued with a much needed walking stick and off we went on a lovely circuit with many stops to examine and learn - Frankincense for example, oozing out of a tree, natural sandpaper (leaves), many types of Bay leaf, Cocoa pods (forest M & Ms) and did you know that the cocoa bean is purple (hence Cadbury's purple wrapping) and the shape of the old coke bottle.... guess where that came from?
A great and interesting tour ending up in the refreshing Parrot's bath rock pool.
Do it again - probably.

Knowledgeable and patient guide Pamela took us through an early morning walk above John Compton dam, pointing out flora and fauna, medicinal use of plants and provided orientation to the sites and sounds around.

My teenage son (17 years) and daughter (just turned 14), along with myself (60 year old Dad) fund the guided hike of the Millet Trail deep in the Saint Lucian mountain rainforest an absolute highlight of our wonderful trip to the island of Saint Lucia.
The experienced guide, Pamela, was as good as an expert guide can get - extraordinarily knowledgeable, helpful, patient and great to engage. We saw many bird species including the Saint Lucia parrot which flew by us in resplendent colour, three other species endemic to Saint Lucia, all three hummingbirds not to mention a tarantula hidden in her home, an extraordinary cricket and beautiful flowers and edible plants like bay leaves, lemon grass and coriander. The marvelous Pamela also shared knowledge of medicinal properties of plants, and much more.
The tour is two to three hours and there is a lot of up and down hiking as it is a mountain trail, although there are no dangerous spots or cliffs (as I have some fear of heights). Beautiful views of the lush rainforest, neighbouring mountains and the Roseau freshwater reservoir.
We had booked a local driver to bring us to and from the trail from Rodney Bay - about a one hour drive.

Millet Bird Reserve:
Better than Tet Paul for nature lovers and hikers looking to hike in the rain forest. Not as difficult as reports of Gros Piton hike nor as difficult to reach as some of the other forest preserve hikes. Did not see any other hikers although we heard that there had been a group earlier in day for bird watching.
Guide: Pamela was excellent. She matched my slow but determined pace. Provided information about the sanctuary, comeback of the parrots on the island as a whole through restoration effort, pointed out trees and plants, crabs, as well as spotting 4 of the 5 endemic bird species for us. Although we were not doing the bird watching hike, we were lucky that the rain had just stopped shortly before we arrived, so the birds were active late morning. And that 2 parrots flew by while we were at the Mt. Gimie viewpoint. Most of the other bird sightings were in sections where coconuts had been set out as feeders. Except for the Black FInches, Pamela spotted the birds in the tree canopy which we would have missed without her. She also answered questions about sounds, frogs and "clack clacks" (katydid relatives?) and wildlife seen elsewhere on the island. Much of the trail is through reforested area (now tall trees). The far end of the loop was in original rain forest (lots of tree ferns).
Entrance fee US$10 for hiking US$30 for bird watching.
Guide required, call 24 hr before to schedule guide. We did hiking so not sure what difference between hiking and bird watching is - possibly access to site before the 8:30? am opening time and expert birder guide? A quick bird identification card with common and endemic species was available for purchase at the entrance building. Wish we had had it the whole time in St. Lucia!
Difficulty: Moderate, lots of up and down. However, it is a well maintained trail with steps on steepest parts. I fortunately brought a hiking stick without which the trail would have been too difficult. We were slow so took longer than the 1.5 hr often quoted for the almost 2 mi hike. Concerned about my hiking ability they offered a shorter nature walk which we declined. Not sure if this alternate trail was just the beginning of the main loop trail or another path near the headquarters.
Access: Taxi from Marigot Bay, US$80 round trip for 2 people. The taxi driver waited while we hiked. Was about 45 min from Marigot Bay on smaller road, about half the distance had lots of potholes. (Not a 15 min drive as stated in some reviews). The ride itself is interesting route through small farming communities (lots of fields of bananas and other crops)
Guide: Up to you if to tip beyond the entrance fee. Please be generous to good guides. Although we usually like to hike at our own pace since we are biologists and do lots of photographs, Pamela greatly increased our appreciation and understanding of the area.
Come and enjoy!!!

Lovely little walk and a beautiful waterfall in the middle, be sure to buy some hot mamas sauce when you finish. She's selling it outside on the street!

I was not planning to do this guided 2-mile loop walk anticipating it to be busy with tourists, but I am most glad we went. We drove from Marigot, pass banana plantations and through local villages, on a decent quality road (watch out for few pot holes). We didn’t see any sign posts, so asked locals for directions.
It took us around 1,5 hrs to complete the walk, steep in places, harder than Tet Paul Nature Trail but much easier than the Edmund Trail. There are three viewing posts which offer good views and opportunity to rest. You will see and learn about rainforest plants and bird life. We were lucky to see St Lucian parrots, many finches and a hamming bird.
EC$25 per person. Good car park and toilet facilities. Pre book Forestry Dep guide (8:30am-3pm) Mon-Fri +1758-451-1691 / +1758-519-0787 / +1758-716-1430, start off early, bring trainers, mosquito spray and bananas to replenish your energy after the walk. Enjoy!

Great experience with a lovely and well informed guide; saw a variety of different birds native to the island, as well as a crab along the way (in a spring). Would highly recommend.

An excellent half day walking in the forest. The guide was knowledgeable and didn't push us along. Some difficult bits, but on the whole fairly easy. Take good walking boots, insect repellent and water. My only disappointment - I didn't see ant parrots!

I was a little disappointed with the Millet Nature Trail Hike, "A Walk on the Wild Side". It was more strenuous than moderate in it's nature, no colorful birds, parrots are long gone too. The coconut bird feeders were neat, however with the same birds seen at our resort. We saw no animals. Our guide was informative and she showed us some herbs, not just for cooking but for use as medicines in their culture, along with plant and tree knowledge and some nice views. "Storman" Norman was an especially pleasant person, very soft spoken, who takes much pride in the education of children in St. Lucia. He did give us information along the drive to and from the center. We did book this through Sandals and we were expecting so much more for our money but I guess looking at it as contributing to the trail and to the people of St. Lucia, makes it always a good thing!
