We accidentally stumbled into this little museum when we missed our ferry and had time to kill in St. George. We were pleasantly surprised! Lady Docent was wonderful! She gave us a very informative tour! She let my kids touch and appreciate a very old and original cedar table, as well as other various artefacts. She explained, in depth, the history behind the home and the purpose of many of the unique trinkets that were sat on the beautiful tables and cabinets. Even my children, which usually aren’t ecstatic about museums, really enjoyed this one and had an extremely amazing time here. Highly recommend this place!!!

Was in St. George late in the season and not much was happening. Found this house museum and it made the trip. One of the oldest houses in Bermuda, stuffed with both historic artifacts and more recent memorabilia (lots about QEII's trip to Bermuda in the 1950s). The guide was a native and went over and above to describe the house, how it was built, what life was like in old Bermuda, etc. Well worth the $5 admission.

Our guide Lynn was an excellent tour guide. She was raised in Bermuda and knew her history. Would definitely recommend a visit to the museum, which is a walk through a period house.

What a lovely experience it was, to tour this circa early 1700`s home! Both docents knew their stuff and could answer any question about construction of the house, daily living, and island culture at the time. Just learning about rainwater collection was worth the price of admission. That it was filled with antiques that were family possessions donated by long time island inhabitants made the experience even more special. This place, and the volunteers who staff it, are real treasures. If you are interested in authentic experiences while in Bermuda, this house should be at the top of your list, followed closely by the National Museum of Bermuda at Royal Dockyard. If you love history, you won`t be disappointed.

We loved our visit to the Mitchell House. The staff were so welcoming, and so knowledgable! You really feel llike you're peeking into life in Bermuda in the 18th Century. The hour spent here was a highlight of our time in Bermuda.

We combined a visit to St George with going to the airport.
We had the taxi wait... about $45 per hour so you don't have to schlep your bags... worth it.
This museum is an architectural treasure as well as having great displays. The printing museum is downstairs.
It felt like the Prado... too much to take in... but in a very small setting.

This superb collection of furniture, china, and silver stands out on its own, of course, but becomes a tapestry of history when related by Beulah Foggo [rhymes with Pogo]. A gracious and knowledgeable volunteer, she captivates visitors with the stories behind not only the home, the printery and the garden, but its lovely furnishings and displayed artifacts. We came and stayed for over and hour and a half. We had especially wanted to see the letterpress which, we learned, only functions on Wednesdays courtesy of skilled volunteer, so we could only examine the work area and equipment, but not take home a "sample" of the press's output. This, according to Beulah, is a great treat for the local school children who love to find "typos" made during the typesetting. Beulah was kind enough to explain the rainwater catchment systems on Bermuda - the house when restored left one room's ceiling under the roof bare so the construction could be appreciated. Her encyclopedic knowledge was explained - she keeps a notebook and whenever she comes across a question she can't answer, or an observation that imparts new information, Beulah adds that to her record and does the research so she can inform new visitors. What a treat! We had a ferry to catch or we'd have stayed even longer. History lovers - don't miss this.

This is a hidden gem in St. George's. I loved our visit to the Mitchell House. Such an insight on life in Bermuda dating back to 1730! We met the most lovely guide who explained so many aspects of the house and how it was built. We would recommend it to anyone visiting St. George's!

We were walking around historic St. George when we happened upon the "welcoming arms" stairs of the Historical Society Museum. We were welcomed in by Beulah, a sweet lady who was very informative. Built in the 1730s by a prosperous St. George’s merchant, Major Walter Mitchell, for his nephew William, Mitchell House has retained all of its 18th century character and charm. The St. George’s Historical Society purchased the property at the corner of Featherbed Alley and Duke of Kent Street in 1922. We enjoyed seeing the artifacts such as the English china, a 300 year old bible and even a letter from George Washington. Beulah showed us the roof and the way the rain water was caught and stored in the large tank that you could access from the outside. We really got a feel for how life must have been in Bermuda during the 1700s. The tour was well worth the $5 admission fee, we enjoyed it very much.

We entered the museum not knowing what to expect. An hour later we left enthralled. You can get the same interest from 20 min but we love authentic history and this is very close to that with many original artefacts brought over from England in 17th century. Also of great interest was how the extremely friendly and helpful guide explained the early construction of the 1730''s building''s roof, windows etc. If you visit St George's don't miss this.

Good afternoon, I've read your question, and I don't have a good address to the museum other then it's on the main street of St. George's I believe it's manned by volunteers, so you have to be 'flexible' when it comes to open hours. There's a donation asked of visitors, but the museum has lots of historical stuff about the area. I apologize that I don't have more information about it, but google it and you can see other comments about the museum. Good luck and enjoy your vacation please!!
